Northern Ireland Memorial Stone
St George's Gardens, Liverpool

 

The 16th June 1996 was the day that the branch, along with other regimental associations, dedicated a memorial stone in memory of local soldiers killed in Northern Ireland. Included in the names was Sgt Tom Ross. The ceremony was attended by the Duke of Westminster and the Lord Lieutenant of Liverpool. Our branch was represented by Colonel Snagg, Buglers from the Regiment and about twenty members of our association.

A buffet was provided at St Georges Hotel after the ceremony and it was during discussions that it was mentioned that another two local members of our regiment, who had been killed in Northern Ireland, were not mentioned on this plaque. Their names were Rfn D.Griffiths and Cpl W.Smith.

After the branch had investigated into this it was decided to try to erect another stone in their memory. Support and donations for the ceremony came from the Royal British Legion, the Orange Order and a man by the name of Tim Graham who organised the first ceremony, and it was held on 11th September 1996.

Each year on the third Sunday of June a memorial service is held at the site of the memorial stone.
